Is Dryer Vent Cleaning Necessary?

If you are like me, you never thought about your dryer or the vent line attached to it- hidden behind the walls. Until one day it crossed your mind, “Do I need to have my dryer vent cleaned?”

Hopefully you had this thought from seeing lint buildup or from seeing something online about dryer vent cleaning rather than from a close call with your dryer catching fire. Yikes!

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) in conjunction with FEMA seeks to educate Americans about the risks and guidelines for dryer safety with the following information:

- 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss.

- Failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.

- Clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry. Don’t forget to clean the back of the dryer where lint can build up. In addition, clean the lint filter with a nylon brush at least every six months or more often if it becomes clogged.

- Clean lint out of the vent pipe every three months.

- Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry.

Hopefully this information helps you understand how critical dryer safety is, and how easy it is to prevent issues. The bottom line is; clean your lint filter with each load, have dryers installed by a professional, and schedule a complete cleaning with us every 3-12 months.
